The Bad Impacts of Virtual Communication

Today I’m going to tell you something very important in today’s digital age, the bad impacts of virtual communication. But before I start my speech I want to ask you a question. Do you have a social network account? I believe all of you must have at least a social network account. In today’s digital age, the virtual communication has become a huge part of our everyday lives. Even one can go almost an entire day without actually interacting with people.

According to a research, teenagers in Indonesia spend most of their time doing virtual communication. There are so many even too many virtual communication media such as emails, text messaging, blackberry messenger, LINE, facebook, twitter, and many others.

It is true that the virtual communication makes us communicates easier. But the virtual communication also has bad impacts for us. The first one is addiction. Nowadays, teenagers can’t live without tweeting every moment, updating their facebook status, or chatting through blackberry messenger. When you go to the mall or other public places, you can see teenagers communicate with their smartphones while they are walking. It shows that the teenagers are completely addicted with the virtual communication.

The second one is impact on interpersonal communication. Nowadays, most of the teenagers didn’t have the ability to express the ideas and thoughts to other people face to face. The major reason is the increased frequency of communication through text messaging and chatting on social media.

Third, effect on non verbal communication. Can you see your friends’ gesture when you’re text messaging with them? Or can you show your expression while you’re chatting on the internet? Lack of face to face communication has reduced the non verbal communication skill.

Fourth, the virtual communication makes us feel close to someone. But in fact, we don’t know him or her at all, because we never meet them in real life and we never a have personal communication with him or her. Don’t you realize it? We feel near but we’re actually far. We also make someone near seems so far. We’d better meet our friends on social media rather than hanging out with them.

Last but not least, virtual communication can also be dangerous for our health. Looking on the monitor for hours can damage our eyes. Besides, our smartphones use receive and transmit radio frequency signals which are similar to radiation given by a microwave which studies have shown to be bad for your health. It can cause brain cancer, Alzheimer, and several other health problems.

As a conclusion, the virtual communication will be fine if we use it wisely. You should try to have more personal communication because a face to face communication will always be the most effective way of communicating. As Charles Dickens said, “Electric communication will never be a substitute for the face of someone who with their soul encourages another person to be brave and true.” That’s the end of my speech thank you for listening and God bless you all.
